Residential Switchboards
Since your switchboard was installed significant advancements have been made not only in electrical protection but also in the legislation that ultimately determines the electrical safety of your switchboard and the entire electrical installation. Old switchboards contain very little electrical protection, limited to short circuit and overcurrent protection. In most cases, few or none of the circuits are fitted with earth leakage protection devices (otherwise known as safety switches or RCDs) which is the electrical protection that will ultimately save lives in the event of an incident. Even well-maintained old switchboards are susceptible to high resistance connections (“hot joints”…or loose connections) which can lead to a fire. Meter panel/s in residential switchboards installed prior to the year 2000 were manufactured of, and comprise asbestos. In its solid state the asbestos is considered non-friable, however, when holes are drilled in the meter panel during alteration in order to fit equipment and install cables, friable dust is created releasing asbestos fibres. These particles settle in your switchboard and potentially blow around your garden, even making their way into your indoor environment.
A safety switch or RCD (Residual Current Device) is an electrical protection device providing earth leakage protection. In the event someone receives an electric shock, there is a “leakage” of current through their body to earth, the RCD detects this leakage by identifying an imbalance of current on the active and neutral conductors of the circuit and potentially saves that life by automatically switches off within 300 milliseconds (0.03 seconds). RCD’s have now been integrated into (miniature) circuit breakers (MCBs) referred to as Residual Current Breaker with Overload (RCBO) or Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB), providing combined electrical protection against fault current, over current, short circuit and earth leakage.
If you have just one safety switch, it does not protect all of the electrical circuits within your home. It does, however, likely protect multiple circuits, the consequence of which will be that when it trips due to a fault, you will lose power to all of the circuits it protects…This always seems to happen on a Friday night. Invest in a switchboard upgrade and avoid expensive after-hours service.
Wherever possible, ATD Electrical pre-build our switchboards before the day of your switchboard upgrade. This ensures that we have time to complete a thorough, quality, compliant and functional switchboard upgrade, restoring power on the same day and allowing you to relax that evening with peace of mind.
LED Lighting
Modern LED light fittings offer unparalleled efficiency, converting 85% of the energy they consume into light and not heat. For comparison sake, an LED downlight consumes just 15% of the energy a 50W halogen downlight consumes and yet halogen downlights convert just 10% of the energy they consume into light, the other 90% into heat. If you’re still running halogen downlights, you’re literally burning money.
LED light fitting offer:
- Lower Running Costs – reduced energy consumption
- Lower Maintenance Costs – reduced maintenance requirements and costs, no changing lamps
- Lower Climate Control Costs – reduced heat = less air-conditioning
- Practical and Durable – longer life span (up to 80,000 hours), longer manufacturer’s warranty (up to 7 years)
- Increased Safety – reduced fire hazard, reduced risk of burns, improved lighting
- Environmentally Friendly – reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reduced landfill
No, modern LED light fittings are often sealed units with no serviceable parts and a long lifecycle. For that reason, those that we use offer manufacturer’s warranties up to 7 years, but we expect they’ll last for up to 10 years without maintenance. In our experience retrofitted LED lamps rarely endure.
“LED compatible” could be used to describe most fittings, you just need to find an LED lamp to suit it for size and lamp holder. LED lamps come in various shapes and sizes and incorporate the LED driver, so often, they’re the expensive part of the “LED compatible” light fitting. Because they’re generally used in a fitting provided by another manufacturer when they fail, which manufacturer will come to the party with warranty? We recommend and supply quality, fit-for-purpose LED light fittings with manufacturer’s warranties up to 7 years, however, we expect they’ll last for up to 10 years without maintenance.
